How Does Your Internet Connection Speed Compare to Users' Worldwide?

Very informative

With the increasing amount of bandwidth we're all sucking down these days, it's no surprise that we often feel like our Internet speeds just aren't fast enough. But how fast are our connections? And how does one country stack up against another? Royal Pingdom has released some data today, based on information from the CDN provider Akamai that compares connections speeds internationally. The report looks at the "real world speeds" (not just what service providers advertise) for people in the 50 countries with the most Internet users - all told 1.8 billion Internet users.

Sponsor

Of the top 10 countries, 3 are from Asia (the top 3, in fact), and 7 are from Europe. Coming in at number 11 is Canada (4.73 Mbits/s), beating the U.S. (4.60 Mbits/s) at number 12. There's quite a range between the number 1 country's speed - South Korea at just under 17 Mbit/s - and the speed of Internet in Iran, 0.41 Mbits/s.

Distribution of Speeds - Within and Across Countries

Based on all countries' speeds - not just the top 50's - the world average Internet speed clocks in at around 1.8 Mbits/s. A little over a fifth of Internet connections are 5 Mbits/s or faster, and more than half are 2 Mbits/s or faster.

The most colorful chart in the Royal Pingdom report looks not just at the average speed within a country, but how speeds are distributed. This graphic shows that while the slowest connection speeds (256 kbit/s) have almost disappeared in most countries, that they still comprise a good proportion of how much of the world connects to the Internet.

TCS to hire 30,000, 70 percent freshers

New Delhi: Tata Consultancy Services plans to hire 28,000 employees in India and 2,000 abroad in the financial year 2010-2011 and about 70 percent of recruitment will be freshers. The company is currently seeing an 8-10 percent growth in revenue from domestic operations and is eyeing a double-digit growth in the next two years.

TCS CEO and MD N Chandrasekaran said that the company will hike salaries of its employees in the coming fiscal, but did not give details, reports Financial Chronicle. TCS, has not hiked wages in the current fiscal, but employees have received 150 percent VA payouts in two consecutive quarters - second and third quarters of FY10.

"We are on a path to hire 1,000 people. We have already hired 300," he said, replying to a query on hiring plans for the current fiscal. In Q3 of FY10, TCS had made 7,692 net additions, compared with a net addition of 320 in the previous quarter.

Asked about the extent to which India would be affected by the U.S. move to slash tax-breaks to outsourcers, Chandrasekaran said the matter is not an immediate concern. Also Chandrasekaran said, "China is a tough market for IT firms and the company was seeing business opportunity in Europe." Chandrasekaran said the company had signed a few large deals as well as a number of smaller ones. "The financial services sector will drive growth. We expect good growth from retail, pharma and utilities," he said.

Qualcomm buys Mango's products ! Congrats! SUNIL MAHESHWARI & Team

    Sujit John | TNN

Bangalore: Many of you may remember this group of youngsters in the picture. We featured them in December 2008, as part of a series that this newspaper has been running on India's innovative technology companies. They had founded a company called Mango Technologies in July 2006. On Wednesday, Mango announced that it had sold two of its software products to Qualcomm, the world's largest wireless semiconductor company. As part of this transaction, Qualcomm received a mobile handset user interface (UI) software and a PC-based UI customization toolkit from Mango.

Sunil Maheshwari, the 35-year-old CEO and founder of the company, declined to specify the value of the deal, restricting himself to saying it was a multi-million dollar deal. Software products made in India are beginning to find their way into global endproducts through licensing arrangements, but this is a rare instance of a company being able to sell its products to a global giant.

Maheshwari compared it to Google buying the Android operating system from a start-up. "Mango would have found it difficult to scale the product's usage. On the other hand, Qualcomm, with its enormous reach among handset makers and operators around the world, would be able to scale it quickly," Maheshwari said. And given Qualcomm's desire to scale the product, it would have been a risk for it to have a licensing arrangement with Mango.
Mango had developed an application framework for lowand mid-tier mobile handsets that not only enables more cost-effective devices, but also enables developers to more quickly create customized mobile applications and user experiences. Steve Sprigg, senior VP of engineering for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, said Qualcomm offered solutions for all tiers of mobile devices, and "our solutions for entry-level markets have been one of the most quickly growing segments of our product portfolio". He said the software products from Mango would "further expand our ability to offer more turnkey solutions to our customers, enabling them to more quickly bring cost-effective and innovative devices to emerging markets".

Along with this sale, Ojas Ventures, the early stage venture fund floated by Infosys cofounder N S Raghavan, which had a stake in Mango, has made an exit from the company. It has been reported that Ojas may have got an IRR of about 70% on this investment in less than two years.
Maheshwari said Mango is buying back the stake from Ojas. So what does Mango do now? Maheshwari said the company sees enormous opportunity in 3G phones and other 3G connected devices for rural markets. "We are trying to make these affordable enough and attractive enough to be used in areas like agriculture, healthcare, education and e-governance, " he said.

Firms wont hire 6th sem students: Nasscom

    By    siliconindia news bureau
    Tuesday,19 January 2010, 07:17 hrs
Bangalore: Nasscom is directing recruiters to hire students only from eighth semester instead of sixth semester onwards to prevent an adverse impact on their education, reports Sridhar Vivan of Bangalore Mirror.

From this year on, firms are supposed to recruit only engineering students in the eighth semester. Prof Dr M Vijayadev, Head (Placement and Training Department), M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology, confirmed this by saying that the companies have been told to do so by Nasscom. "The hiring season has begun in full swing. I can definitely say recession has receded but companies are playing it safe," he said

According to Nasscom, owing to increasing rate of growth of the industry and the high demand for engineers, the recruitment process till now commenced from the sixth semester. As early recruitment could adversely affect the students academically, Nasscom has suggested campus hiring from the eighth semester. Nasscom Chief Som Mittal says, "We believe that in some institutions, the recruitment process gets started as early as in the fifth semester. This has resulted in students having a job offer on hand even though they still have over one year to complete their studies."

However this also brings in a certain degree of complacency, and in some manner impacts the education process. It also inhibits student from taking up post-graduate studies, which has its own cascading impact on quality of research in India.

From the industry perspective as well, companies have to make an estimate of their requirements almost 18-24 months prior to their need. This worked well in past with some degree of certainty of growth, but is increasingly difficult during current economic environment. In many cases, it has also led to joining dates of students getting staggered and deferred.
